We are in the midst of a severe drought here. Everyone is praying for rain. Four million people are in need of relief food, especially in Northern Kenya. One day I met a “gentleman of the road” (too old to be a street boy) who had the poorest excuse for shoes I ever saw. I don’t know what came over me but I just took the guy to the store to buy him a pair of shoes. He said he did a lot of walking so he wanted something like a boot. So I picked out a pair of boots that seemed adequate and in my price range and in his size. He obediently tried them on and carefully put the laces through ALL the holes. This whole process was quite tedious because the guy was still a bit under the influence and trying to carry on a conversation at the same time.
Finally he had both boots on and they fit and all seemed well to me. Then the guy pointed to another pair and said “I think I like THAT pair better.” I was annoyed! I was in a hurry and well, beggars can’t be choosers, right? WRONG! Right at that moment God spoke to my heart and told me I had to treat that man with dignity, respect and love. Otherwise I was just a clanging gong. It’s all in 1 Corinthians chapter 13. The guy walked out with the boots HE wanted and some socks as well. I learned a valuable lesson. Lucky for us God uses our good intentions – even if they are self-serving.
Lots of action and road trips here at Pamoja trying to find schools for all the previous Home Schoolers. Here it is not automatic that a student goes to High School. It depends on their grade on the National Exam and if the school accepts them. Usually they have to go for an interview. It is very stressful for the students. Not to mention the rest of us. We are constantly looking for schools. I’ve learned to tell very good stories to School Principals to get them to accept boys whose grades are not quite high enough.
Some of the boys came for tutoring every day while they were waiting to start school. As of today, 1 boy has gone back to class 8 to repeat and try to get a better grade on the National Exam this year and 5 boys are now in High Schools (hurray!!!!!) One boy started Vo-Tech for electrician. One has been accepted to a High School but has not started yet. And 4 who failed the exam are still trying to figure out their purpose in life. Flora and I have been doing lots of counseling and I hope- empowering. We’re trying to get them to be as independent as possible.
And we also got the other 8 boys who were already in formal schools back to their schools. Pauline, our only girl, is still waiting to hear the results of her exam. She finished High School in November. She has been coming to Pamoja every day to learn computer skills. She would like to go to Nursing School if her grades are good enough. Would someone like to sponsor

It’s been an expensive month here. Uniforms, school shoes, school fees, and a big water bill. So I am praying God will touch some hearts out there to feed our starving bank account.
