College Students Using Condoms Incorrectly

March 19, 2006 (FPRC) -- Superior, WI - College students are not always using condoms correctly, according to the latest study at Condom Hall (sexual health organization for students since 1991). In January of 2006, Mr. Chris Carey, Director of Condom Hall www.condomhall-condoms.org, and colleagues surveyed 858 heterosexual male students at eighteen large universities across the country. Each student reported having used a condom at least four times in the previous two months. According to the survey, 42% reported not leaving space for semen at the top of the condom and 17% said they took off a condom before having finished sex. In addition, 34% of the male students reported incidents of a condom breaking during sexual intercourse and 15% said a condom had slipped off during sex. Carey said that the breakage and slippage of condoms is most likely due to "condom-use mistakes" and not defective condoms.
Condom Hall's research also showed that 58% of the men did not discuss condom use with their partner before sex, and 45% reported instances when they wanted to use a condom but did not have any available.
Carey has been in the healthcare industry for over 20 years and sees potential problems in the survey and with college students using condoms incorrectly, adding "these students need to do a better job in protecting themselves and their partners from AIDS, STDs, and unwanted pregnancies". "Promoting condom use is great, but it may not be enough. Sexually active students must know how to use condoms correctly. Condom education is just as important as condom usage", Carey explains.
