April 29, 2006 (FPRC) -- Solomon Rothman, a freelance web designer and amateur filmmaker based in Los Angles, shot, starred in, and directed a full length feature film. The trailer for the film is available at Google Video, Youtube, and the Internet Movie Archives. The full movie is to be released for free online by the end of June.

Solomon Rothman and Aurora Mae produced ‘Boy Who Never Slept’ with the ultimate goal of releasing it online, completely for free, under a Creative Commons license. The film, like the trailer, will be available to anyone, allowing users to copy, use, download, and place the material wherever and however they want.

‘Boy Who Never Slept’ centers on the life of an insomniac writer who meets a teenage girl online, and a friendship that grows into an unlikely love story wrapped in harsh reality. The movie stars friends of the filmmaker and was made for $200 while Solomon Rothman was in college.

Mr. Rothman supports traditional cinema, but also believes that the future lies in the digital realm. More than anything else, he is curious to see how a free movie will do online and how people will react to a movie that is not only free, but available for anyone to use however they want.

“I’m very excited about how powerful the internet is as a distribution source for movies, and how new technologies like Google video have empowered amateur filmmakers with the ability to reach a large audience and have their work be accessible to everyone. That’s powerful,” says Solomon Rothman.

“So powerful, in fact, that I had to take advantage of this unique opportunity. I believe it’s possible, that this movie I shot with no budget and will release online for free, could potentially reach as many viewers as a major theatrical release. Since ‘Boy Who Never Slept’ was shot with a zero dollar budget in the true spirit of Indy film, I don’t know if it’s technically sound enough to reach that audience level, but I’m going to try; the window is here and now.”
