May 19, 2006 (FPRC) -- With Romania set to join the EU, an expat from the UK starts a blog about living in this former communist country. The governments and publicity machines of the west will only ever show a sanitized view of life in Romania. Get the real picture here.
For the purpose of the blog his name is G. For reasons of security, he can't say exactly where he lives in Romania or what his real name is as the Romanian government still retains a communist mind set and he doesn't want to endanger his residence visa.
"There are many great thing about Romania," said G, "but there are lots of bad things too." He goes on to explain that the Romanians are a wonderful, hospital people with warms hearts. However corruption is rife and the systems of government, education, health and law are a shambles.
With the recent failure of the European Union to come to a conclusion on whether to allow Romania and Bulgaria to enter on 1 January 2007 or delay entry until 2008, as well as the recent bird flu epidemic, G's blog will give you the real inside story to life in Romania.
The blog gives the real view of life in Romania including the health care system, the local politics, the state of the roads and infrastructure and even the weather. Plus G's thoughts, tips, hints and sometimes frustrations about living in Romania.
Romanians have a saying when they greet someone who has just arrived, “Welcome to Romania... When are you leaving?” This reflects the common desire to leave Romania and head west, not because they are greedy, not because they are disloyal or non patriotic but because they don't see things changing in Romania. You still need to bribe doctors to see you, you still need to bribe officals to get paperwork, the salaries are low and the costs high. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
