May 4, 2007 (FPRC) -- The groundbreaking television show “Cagney & Lacey” redefined the way women were portrayed on TV.
In their only public appearance together, the award-winning actresses who played those iconic NYPD detectives, Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless, will team up at the Fifth Avenue Barnes & Noble in New York City at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15 for a signing and reunion, as the Season 1 DVD will be released on May 8.
They will be joined by the show’s Executive Producer (and husband of Gless), Barney Rosenzweig, who will be signing his book: Cagney & Lacey…and Me.
Set in New York, Cagney & Lacey broke ground in areas that no one in television had touched including:
Domestic violence
Date rape
Breast cancer
Racism
“The idea behind Cagney & Lacey was never just to create a show; it was to create a show that mattered,” says Rosenzweig.” I think we accomplished that because the legacy still lives on. Cagney & Lacey was about two women who happen to be cops, not two cops who happen to be women. It was about their lives, their struggles, their heartache, and sometimes it was so real the lines between life on- and off-screen became blurred.”
Rosenzweig, who’s been called “The Man Behind the Women’s Movement,” used this pioneering TV show to offer vibrant, feisty, outspoken and smart women, portrayed by Emmy and Golden Globe award winners Daly and Gless, in contrast to the vanilla, one-dimensional female characters TV was used to. “Many consider this to be a landmark show in the women’s movement, and I would have to agree. We wanted to change things, and I think we did,” adds Rosenzweig.
