Christian News Site Expands: Called "Tabloid of the Gods"

Christianity In The News: The Good, The Bad, The Odd. You decide which is which.

June 5, 2007 (FPRC) -- AUSTIN, Texas -- Christian News doesn't have to be boring -- or so says editor and writer Brian Robertson. To back up that claim, he's launched Christianity In The News (www.christianityinthenews.com) with a collection of news, reviews, and information, some of which has been termed "odd."

In fact, the site's motto is, "Christianity in the News: The Good, The Bad, The Odd. You decide which is which."

"Most of the Christian news sites I visited were evangelical or fundamentalist in nature," Robertson explains, "and I wanted something that represented a broader, more inclusive kind of Christianity. Everyone who reads it has their own individual opinion as to a particular story. Is it inspiring? Informative? Hostile?"

The reaction to the site has been mixed opinions, but all of them strong. "The more broad-minded find it fascinating and, according to some, funny and entertaining," Robertson explains. Those of the more fundamentalist bent are, apparently, in a bit of a quandary, even though the site does feature stories that cut across all boundaries of liberal and conservative, let alone denominations. Robertson is the first to admit -- he's delighted.

"I don't know how many letters I have received from people about a particular story saying, 'Stop making these things up! You're making Christianity look stupid!' I remind them that these are news stories – meaning, well, they actually happened."
Some of the recent stories that one might file under the "Odd" section include:

·What Would Action Figure Jesus Do?
·Dress Worn By Mary When She Birthed Jesus On Display
·Jerry Falwell Bobblehead Given Nod By Faithful
·Jesus Image Appears In Bird Dropping
·Paris Hilton Tries God's Patience
·Pastor's Father Killed While Mowing Church's Lawn
·Church Gives Choir-mistress A Choice: Church or Sex Toys
·Wrestling For Jesus

At the same time, there are articles on the persecution of Christians in places such as Iraq, Pakistan and India as well as what might be called "quaint" articles such as, "The Gospel According To Mayberry."

The news comes from a number of sources including the paper's own research and reporting, and Robertson credits fans of the site with sending him stories that he then develops for Christianity In The News.

As a writer, Robertson's books include LITTLE BLUES BOOK with R. Crumb and WILD HORSE DESERT as well as a number of articles for Christian magazines and publications. In addition, he has worked as a professional storyteller, musician and executive director of The Christ Path, a nonprofit organization.
