Millions of pounds of reclaimed and recycled vinyl are used annually by manufacturers of building products, many of which will be on display at this year’s bigger-than-ever Greenbuild conference and expo at McCormick Place in Chicago, November 7-9.
One company, Oscoda Plastics of Oscoda, Michigan, last year recycled more than six million pounds of post-industrial vinyl from autos, roofing and billboards and turned it into specialty non-slip flooring, Protect-All, which resists mildew and other bacterial growth. It also resists corrosion from chemicals or grease, making it ideal for many commercial flooring needs, from industrial kitchens to automotive service facilities, according to national sales manager John Rouse.
The company exhibited at Greenbuild for the first time last year and was delighted with the attention its recycled vinyl flooring received. “People like its green attributes,” Rouse said. Sales have gone very well, and they expect a further boost from this year’s expo, which will be attended by more than 18,000 builders, architects, designers and other building professionals.
Mannington, the Salem, New Jersey-based flooring company which has won numerous environmental awards for recycling and reducing waste, is another major user of recycled vinyl. Its booth at this year’s expo will focus on the concept of choice – the fact that there are many options in choosing green materials, according to environmental vice president Dave Kitts.
Mannington specializes in reclaiming and recycling vinyl-backed carpet and turning it into new soft and hard floor coverings, including modular carpet tile and both commercial sheet and tile products for use in health care, educational and other commercial settings. Kitts noted that well over 75,000 tons of vinyl-backed carpet have been recycled by the industry over the past decade.
