EarthLink’s Corporate Irresponsibility Negatively Affects Couple’s Home-Based Businesses

John and Elizabeth Kupcha each run home-based businesses. Actions by EarthLink have prevented this Long Island couple from conducting their business affairs.

January 17, 2008 (FPRC) -- Over the course of two weeks, the Kupcha’s EarthLink account has been hacked six separate times; the last two actions resulted in the deactivation of their account. Representatives from EarthLink claim that there isn’t anything that can be done to expedite the reactivation of the Kupcha’s EarthLink service.

Mr. Kupcha is a freelance plumbing and fire protection engineer and has been a sole proprietor since 2001. The lifeline of his business is on the computer as well as his ability to send and receive e-mail. Since 3:30 p.m. on January 16, 2008, his capabilities to conduct e-mail transactions ceased. Mr. Kupcha is at the risk of losing thousands of dollars and a host of clients due to EarthLink’s substandard security measures.

In addition to Mrs. Kupcha’s full-time job as a Marketing Director for an engineering firm, she also provides freelance marketing consulting services and is an independent consultant for Passion Parties. The clients that Mrs. Kupcha has for her marketing consultant have her phone number so reaching her is not a problem. However, her Passion Parties business is web-based and her leads are forwarded by e-mail only; the e-mail address listed with her business is with EarthLink, her potential clients don’t have any other means to reach her.

The inferior security procedures that are implemented by EarthLink has caused unauthorized access to the Kupcha’s account and result in the setup of an assortment of web domain profiles on four separate occasions and associated billing attempts to Mrs. Kupcha’s credit card. Mrs. Kupcha spent at least an hour on the phone with EarthLink’s Customer Service and Technical Support Departments; on January 16, 2008. She spent a total of five hours on phone support and online chat support to no avail.

EarthLink is not remorseful. The Kupcha’s have been recipients of insincere apologies and broken promises on the part of EarthLink. They stand to lose thousands of dollars and immeasurable credibility.

John and Elizabeth Kupcha are in pursuit of the American Dream and fully resent corporate incompetence that prevents them from dong so.
