March 29, 2008 (FPRC) -- MONROVIA, CA – Edward Lanphier, President & Chief Executive Officer at Sangamo BioSciences, which published a new study last October indicating that its technology could be used to modify the genomes in stem cells, create stem cell lines that mimic disease, and modify stem cells to treat diseases, will present at the 4th International Stem Cell Research & Therapeutics, Apr 17-18, 2008 in Boston, MA.

Dr. Lanphier will discuss stem cell mobilization and directed differentiation and the role of zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) in stem cell research and therapies. ZFPs are the dominant class of naturally occurring DNA-binding motifs found in nature. Efficient and highly precise gene regulation or modification can be achieved by engineering ZFPs to bind to and recognize a specific DNA sequence. Using this powerful platform, ZFPs have been designed that promote the mobilization of endogenous human stem cells providing strategies for cell regeneration and cell repair. Use of zinc finger nucleases (ZFN) for precision "genome editing” has enabled specific gene modification or targeted gene addition for directed differentiation in human stem cells. This workshop addresses the role of engineered zinc finger proteins in stem cell mobilization and in modification of human stem cells for correction of genetic disease..

The conference also features presentations from other leading organizations such as FDA, Genzyme, Geron, Joint Committee on Health Care Financing (by Senator Richard Moore), Merck, MIT, Novartis, Pfizer, Sanofi Aventis, Stemagen, UCSB, University of Van Amsterdam, Whitehead Institute, and many more. The full agenda is available online at www.gtcbio.com.

GTCbio’s 4th Stem Cell Research & Therapeutics will take place on April 17-18, 2008 in Boston, MA and will cover Stem Cell Biology, Adult Stem Cells, Embryonic Stem Cells, Differentiation of Stem Cells, Epigenomics & Reprogramming of Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine & Therapeutics, Stem Cell Imaging, Regulatory Aspects & Funding Opportunities, Cancer Stem Cells, and Stem Cell Applications in Drug Discovery.
