March 27, 2008 (FPRC) -- Sports fans have been betting on March Madness for decades. Ever since college basketball has been televised its popularity has continued to grow, becoming one of the most watched and bet on sporting events of the year. It is estimated that sports fans bet about $4 billion during March Madness which is twice as much as what is normally wagered on the Super Bowl.
Bets on the Final Four will be staggering going into this season's NCAA Tournament. As the tournament progresses and teams are eliminated, even more sports fans become interested in placing their bets on the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8. Everyone wants to choose a winner which becomes easier as the field narrows.
Most of the teams who have won the NCAA basketball tournaments have had the advantage of the experience of their upperclassmen/seniors. People who bet on the Final Four should take that into consideration. Even though experts suggest that you bet on a team's record against the spread at the start of the tournament, in reality, you should focus on intangibles such as a team's courage when betting on the Final Four. It always seems as if the teams that have strong senior leadership have the best chance of winning in the long run.
College basketball fans will most likely agree that seniors have the experience to deal with the pressure of this level of competition. They are capable of handling the responsibility of carrying their team all the way to the Final Four.
During March Madness, it's usually safe to bet on teams that play with the most enthusiasm. However, when betting on the Final Four, experience and talent is more important. A team's attitude and emotions can get them off to a good start but over the course of a tough schedule, the teams with experience usually pull out ahead. Some seniors may have a difficult time but it's generally the freshmen who break under the pressure.
