April 2, 2008 (FPRC) -- While many have translated ancient Greek classic works into English, and many others have given us new and inspiring translations of Kafka, Nietzsche, Rousseau, Aristotle, Rene Descartes, Denis Diderot and Karl Marx, how many can be said to have successfully translated all of those mentioned, and more? It requires a unique and special talent to translate the work of so many in such a variety of languages and genres, and all with so intimate a translation that there have been greater than 10 million page viewings to the various works on this translator's website since it's inception.
Richer Resources Publications is pleased to announce the release of new translations by Ian Johnston of three of the Western world’s best-loved Greek plays: Bacchae by Euripides, and by Aristophanes, Clouds and Frogs. This brings to 8 the number of Mr. Johnston's translations released in just the last 14 months.
Johnston, a retired professor of English, Classics and Liberal Studies living in British Columbia, is one of the most prolific, talented and diversified translators working today. He is known for his powerful and direct style, and his ability to make the works accessible to the modern reader while remaining faithful to the original work. This unique talent is making his work increasingly the translations of choice for high schools, colleges and universities throughout the English-speaking world.
"Students reading this translation will have no doubt of the passion and issues raised by the plays," according to Elaine Fantham, Professor Emerita from Princeton. Johnston’s translations of the classic Greek plays have been used in numerous dramatic performances, including at Oxford University. These latest works follow by less than 6 months the release of his translations of The Oresteia by Euripides, Antigone and Oedipus the King by Sophocles. Beginning in April, the publisher will release Johnston's translations of works by Friedrich Nietzsche, followed by Franz Kafka and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In 2006, his translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey in a modern English poetic form were released and reviewed on NPR.
