April 18, 2008 (FPRC) -- Hannah Montana is Disney's hit show about a teen pop singer who moved from Tennessee to Malibu. Williamson County native Miley Ray Cyrus and her father, country singer-songwriter Billy Ray Cyrus, star in the show.

Filming for the Hannah Montana movie begins in and around Nashville on May 6.

The state's Film, Entertainment and Music Commission fought to get Disney to film the movie in Tennessee, saying the film would give the area an economic benefit as well as recognition in the filmmaking industry.

Disney officials hesitated to film in the state because they were unsure every position for the movie's crew could be filled with the level of experience needed. In the end, a deal was made.

Kim Petrosky, who owns a Nashville-based casting firm, said Tennessee is getting the chance to shine in the film industry with movies like "Billy: The Early Years," a film about the Rev. Billy Graham, and with other major motion picture companies now considering the area.

"Nashville is getting in the running with of a lot of cities in the southeast to be a filming location," Petrosky said. "We have a large talent pool here."

An open casting call was held on April 6 at the Sommet Center in downtown Nashville for extras in the film. People who did not make it to the open call can still be considered to be an extra by sending in a 4" X 8" color snapshot. No experience is necessary.

The background actors — who will have non-speaking parts — could work one day to several weeks, and an average of 12 to 14 hours each day, according to Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures national publicity office.
