April 24, 2008 (FPRC) -- Dr. Herbert Fritsche, Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center will be speaking at GTCbio’s 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers conference on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA. Dr. Fritsche will present on “Circulating Tumor Cell Assays: A Prognostic and Predictive Factor for Breast, Prostate and Colon Cancer.”
The current and well-accepted hypothesis of cancer metastasis suggests that tumor cells are released into the blood and circulate until they are either eliminated by host response mechanisms or until they find an environment in which to reside and proliferate. Thus, the detection of circulating tumor cells may represent an early indication of micro-metastasis or of aggressive tumors which are able to shed tumor cells into the blood. Detection methods based on RT-PCR of specific tumor marker genes performed on whole blood specimens have been controversial for several reasons. The lack of tumor or tissue specificity of the selected genes coupled with the high sensitivity of PCR leads to false positive test results for the whole-blood, RT-PCR approach.
The 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference will expose attendees to the latest advancements and developments in biomarkers and predictive medicine. Attendees will gain insight into discovery and development processes, hear about new biomarkers and upcoming trends in the industry, as well as the status of those in clinical trials. Delegates will also receive highly valuable information on tools for improving reimbursement strategies and the efficacy and validation of biomarkers.
