Spanish Tourism Not Affected by Worldwide Financial Crisis

Tourism in spain up in first quarter of 2008 from last year

 Print View

May 22, 2008 (FPRC) -- Figures released today suggest that the current financial strains felt across the world don’t seem to be affecting the steady flow of tourists arriving in Spain. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and tourism of Spain confirmed that 15,2 million foreign tourists arrived in Spain during the first 4 months of 2008.

Even more surprising perhaps is that this figure represents a 3,3% increase for the same period of 2007. The announcement will come as welcome news with Spain’s main income coming from tourism. The country has suffered both flooding and droughts in recent weeks - depending on the area – so hoteliers will have missed essential income as May is usually a strong month. However, they hope to recuperate this loss with the coming of spring and the hot weather.

The profile of visitors to Spain has not changed either with respect to last year. Of the 15,2 million visitors, 3,9 million visitors came from the United Kingdom. The next most popular nationality was Germany with 2,6 million, and finally the French with 2,08 million visitors.

The boom in hotel construction of the previous few tyears has proven fruitful, and although recently production of certain construction materials, such as bricks, has come to a virtual standstill, the hotel industry is still enjoying the continued successes from their neighbouring countries. The rise of apartment rental companies will also take a share of the main tourist accomodation sector, but it is very small in comparison to the extensive network of hotels throughout Spain (including of course the Balaeric islands and canary islands) itself.

David writes about Apartments for rent, Barcelona and Cheap barcelona apartments.
