DRE Veterinary Taps Into Vet Market to Evolve Telemetry Products

An innovator of vet-specific telemetry products, DRE Veterinary works with its customers to refine its wireless monitoring systems.

May 28, 2008 (FPRC) -- Telemetry has long been a staple of the medical industry; however, the technology only recently made its mark on the veterinary industry. In 2006, when DRE Veterinary unveiled the Vetrec VST, a veterinary wireless telemetry system, the company was blazing new territory.

"We created the Vetrec VST in response to requests for a telemetry system specifically tailored to the needs of veterinarians," said Jim Evans, Director of DRE Veterinary. "The Vetrec VST is one of the first telemetry systems built specifically for the vet market."

DRE Veterinary launched the Vetrec VST in October 2006. The first generation version of the VST allowed veterinarians to wirelessly monitor up to eight animals from a single location. It monitored both mobile and recovering animals via portable ECG transmitters.

In addition to ECG monitoring, the first generation system featured intuitive, Windows-based software. The software provided many essential monitoring functions, including auto-charting; full disclosure; auto-generation of alarm events; and trends, charts and strips for arrhythmia.

Shortly after its release, the Vetrec VST was quickly adopted by many veterinary emergency and critical care facilities throughout the eastern United States. As more facilities have adopted the system, DRE Veterinary has worked with its install base to flush out improvements.

"We have utilized the Vetrec VST’s growing user base to better understand what features we should add to the product," said Evans. "This has helped us stay in front of the needs of our customers and has helped us evolve the Vetrec VST."

In the two years since DRE Veterinary released the Vetrec VST, it has doubled the monitoring capabilities of the system from eight animals to 16. The latest edition of the Vetrec VST also integrates with two of DRE Veterinary’s multi-parameter monitors—the DRE Spectra AG5 and the DRE Waveline Plus—allowing veterinarians to monitor multiple parameters from the central station.

Continual improvement of the Vetrec VST has not only helped DRE Veterinary improve its existing wireless monitoring product, it has helped the company explore new technologies. This led to the creation of the Vetrec PDM, DRE Veterinary’s latest wireless monitoring product that was released in 2007.

"The DRE Vetrec PDM is an all-in-one central station," said Evans. "The Vetrec PDM provides software similar to that of the VST, but does so in a compact package that has an innovative touchscreen."
All central station components of the Vetrec PDM are housed in an all-inclusive device that is similar in size to a 15-inch computer monitor. Functionality takes place on the system’s easy-to-use touchscreen, eliminating the need for a keyboard and mouse.

Like the Vetrec VST, the Vetrec PDM seamlessly integrates with the Waveline Plus, DRE Veterinary’s seven-parameter patient monitor. Vital signs from up to six Waveline Plus monitors can be tracked and stored on the Vetrec PDM in real time.

In addition to providing vet wireless monitoring, the Vetrec PDM provides patient data management functions that surgeons can use to compile patient information such as medical history, medications and previous treatments.

"Patient data management has been such a valuable tool that we added this functionality to the Vetrec VST," said Evans.

DRE Veterinary recently upgraded both the Vetrec VST and PDM to automatically compile and archive user-selected discharge reports. Facilities with networked systems can utilize this function to automatically send discharge reports in PDF format to hospital management systems and email accounts.

The Vetrec VST is available with four, eight and 16 channels of monitoring capability. It supports any combination of portable ECG transmitters and DRE Veterinary-brand patient monitors.

The Vetrec VST is available with a large, secondary flat screen monitor that interfaces directly with the central station CPU. This provides a simulcast of vital signs displayed on the central station monitor. Veterinarians can utilize the secondary monitor to track vital signs of all animals in their facility from an additional location.

The Vetrec PDM monitors, displays and stores information sent by up to six Waveline Plus patient monitors. The Waveline Plus, incorporated with wireless technology, directly links with the Vetrec PDM. This makes the monitor portable through pre-op, surgery and recovery.

The Vetrec PDM and the Vetrec VST are available now from DRE Veterinary. More information can be viewed in the monitoring section at www.dreveterinary.com.
