May 29, 2008 (FPRC) -- Michelle Ingrid Williams is an Academy Award-nominated American actress. Williams broke into stardom on the teen series Dawson's Creek and later graduated to full-length features, most notably Brokeback Mountain, for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Williams was engaged to Australian actor Heath Ledger and gave birth to their daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger, on October 28, 2005, in New York City.Matilda's godfather is Jake Gyllenhaalwhile her godmother is Busy Philipps, Michelle's co-star on Dawson's Creek.The couple met on the set of the film Brokeback Mountain, in which they played husband and wife. During their time together they lived in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, New York. On September 2, 2007, People.com reported that Williams and Ledger had decided to split after three years together.On September 4, 2007, Williams' father confirmed to Sydney Daily Telegraph that Ledger and Williams had indeed split. In an interview given to Wonderland magazine, prior to Ledger's death, Michelle Williams spoke of their break-up and of her life as a single mother."
After Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment on January 22, 2008, from what was later determined to be an accidental overdose of doctor-prescribed medications, an unidentified source reported to Us Weekly the reaction of Williams, who was in a hotel room in Sweden, where she was filming Mammoth: "She cried and screamed as soon as she heard." On February 1, 2008, Ledger's publicist released the first public statement from Michelle Williams on her own response to his death: "Please respect our need to grieve privately. My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him." In early February 2008, Williams flew from New York City first to Los Angeles and then to Perth, to attend memorial and funeral services,] including a wake on Cottesloe Beach.
