July 15, 2008 (FPRC) -- Edward J. Kowlowitz, M.D., owner and medical director of the Indianapolis-based specialty practice Center for Pain Management, was recently elected president of the Indiana Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ISIPP). Kowlowitz will lead the state chapter of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) in promoting the development and practice of safe, high quality and cost-effective interventional pain management techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of pain and related disorders.

“One out of every five Americans suffers from some sort of chronic pain — such as arthritis, back pain or migraines — which limits everyday activities, creates emotional stress and reduces quality of life. While every pain patient is unique, what they all have in common is a desperate need for relief,” stated Kowlowitz. “I look forward to working with Indiana’s network of interventional pain physicians in advancing the society’s mission of ensuring patient access to the treatments and care they need to find relief.”

Kowlowitz, a native of New York, earned his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at Columbia University and completed medical school at New York Medical College. After completing a residency at Danbury (CT) Community Hospital, he performed both his anesthesiology residency and chronic pain management fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.

Kowlowitz employs a multidisciplinary approach to pain management in his practice. He and his colleagues at the Center for Pain Management design unique treatment plans for patients that may include interventional procedures, physical therapy, medication management and psychological counseling to help patients manage or overcome their conditions.

Kowlowlitz also is one of the Midwest’s most experienced physicians using neuromodulation to treat chronic neuropathic pain. He has done extensive research and training to evaluate and improve the safety and effectiveness of implantable devices such as spinal cord stimulators.

Prior to opening the Center for Pain Management in 1992, he held numerous leadership positions including Chief of Anesthesiology at PhysiciansCare Outpatient Surgical Center and Medical Director of the Winona Hospital Pain Management program. Kowlowitz is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with added qualifications in pain management and pain medicine; the American Board of Pain Medicine; and the American Academy of Pain Management.
