July 30, 2008 (FPRC) -- New non-profit parenting Internet radio show provides practical parenting tips for setting parents free from guilt and bondage of their children's behavior problems. Mental Health counselor Lorena Jefferson asks all parents, 'Why do the time when you didn't do the crime?'
Mental Health Counselor Lorena Jefferson, creator of Choices For Parents and Choices For Parents with Teens and a mother of two teens, puts it like this: 'Parents have been blessed with an opportunity to create a masterpiece. Children are art! Parenting is an art form. Children are to be handled with care so that when our work is on display, people will be pleased to view the masterpiece and will be in awe of the craftsmanship of the art a parent have created. As, for the parent of the adolescent and older, there's good news and bad news; the bad news first, if kids are not given the foundations they need for their survival, there will be consequences. Without a doubt parents are responsible for the monster they create if negligent.'
The most important thing to know about this stage is that there is really nothing more you can do with this age group. You have no power to control this individual who has made it their life’s mission to break out from under your control. You can attempt to guide, empower and support them but I am sorry to tell you that it’s the end of the road for you after that. Your God-like days are gone and you become just a guardian of a potential –adult. You have to accept this truth if you are ever going to have a real life. Now I am going to tell you a secret that will set you free from this bondage of guilt, if you allow yourself to internalize, process and receive this gift of life. No matter what has happened before this era in the life of your child, there comes a time when every person is aware of right and wrong. This is a build mechanism that lets us know by using the barometer of feeling as a guide. When you do something wrong , aren’t you aware of it? There a nudge inside of us all even as little children, why do you think the baby looks at you when it’s going to reach for something? All people have this sense, so none is without excuse down to the baby! Your child is making a choice to do whatever it is they are involved in. You are looking at the situation and saying, if only I had…Hear me when I say to you that the fact of the matter is that even if you had, the ending would not have been different. Your child, like you, at this age has developed its own perceptions and opinions and will direct his life accordingly, despite what you feel or say about it. As parents, you have to learn not to take it personal. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them becoming whom they have chosen to be.
