September 3, 2008 (FPRC) -- The YWCA Dayton will commemorate the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its annual fundraising breakfast on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 7:30am at the Dayton Convention Center. The program, entitled "Heroes and Sheroes" will recognize groups and individuals who have gone "above and beyond" to show support and bring awareness to stop domestic violence.

On display at the event will be The Clothesline Project, a visual display that bears witness to the violence against women. Started in 1990, The Clothesline Project consists of shirts, each designed by an abuse survivor or in memory of a woman who has died as a result of abuse. The purpose of the project is four-fold: To bear witness to the survivors and victims of abuse against women; to help with the healing process for people who have lost a loved one or are survivors of abuse; to educate, document, and raise society’s awareness of this problem; and to provide a nationwide network of support, encouragement, and information.

Additionally on display will be the Silent Witness Initiative consisting of life size silhouettes that represent women and children in our community killed by domestic violence. The collaboration between the YWCA Dayton’s Clothesline Project and the Artemis Center’s Silent Witness Initiative represents the systematic continuation of efforts by the YWCA Dayton to educate the community about domestic violence.

To attend the free fundraising breakfast at the Dayton Convention Center on October 2nd, please call or e-mail Angie Hoschouer at 937-461-5550 x 179 or ahoschouer@ywcadayton.org. Reservations are required. More information is available at the YWCA Dayton website at www.ywcadayton.org.

The YWCA Dayton has a 138-year legacy of service to women and children who have turned to it in their darkest hours seeking comfort and the opportunity to rebuild their broken lives. Every day, its team addresses the most crucial needs in our community, including: domestic violence; homelessness; teen issues; childcare; affordable housing; racial justice; and self sufficiency and personal development for women.
