September 11, 2008 (FPRC) -- Following tests using GPS vehicle tracking systems, the Department for Transport has revealed that Greater Manchester has the slowest peak hour traffic of any city outside London.

The figures show that average speeds on the region's main roads between 07:00 and 09:30 are 13 miles per hour, according to the Manchester Evening News.

It is understood that GPS vehicle tracking monitored roads in both in the city centre and out in Greater Manchester.

"This latest research shows Greater Manchester has the slowest rush hour roads in the country - and this will only get worse, further damaging our economy and quality of life," Ken Knott, founder member of the business pressure group, United City, told the news provider. He added that traffic congestion is a growing issue for every city region in the world.

A spokesperson for Manchester’s vehicle tracking specialists Genesis Communications commented on the recent reports:

'Traffic congestion is a growing concern for many businesses, not just in Manchester, but across the U.K. For this reason, many organisations are looking to implement GPS vehicle tracking systems in order to combat, not just congestion but also rising fuel costs. Our xTrack devices have been specially designed that business fleets run as effortlessly as possible.'
