September 19, 2008 (FPRC) -- Uplift Austin, a nonprofit project designed to beautify local schools and teach real-world skills to local youth, was declared the winner of the first-ever NLI Media Challenge on Thursday, Sept. 4. As the winner, Uplift Austin receives $20,000 worth of marketing services from NLI Media Group, a division of Austin-based Network Logistic Inc. that provides Web design, software development, online marketing and branding. Uplift Austin was honored Sept. 4 at a reception at the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Austin.

Through this challenge, NLI Media Group solicited business plans or startup business models from entrepreneurs, nonprofits, associations or groups whose concepts promote economic growth in Austin and empowers the community. Under the Uplift Austin program, students team up with design professionals and college students in the fields of landscape design, interior design, green building and public art.

Using their own schools as project sites and later extending their reach to other community buildings, students apply their learning to remodeling their campuses. Each student graduates from the program with high school credit, a certificate of completion and the opportunity for a design internship. 'The marketing resources provided by NLI Media Group will allow Uplift Austin to assist economically disadvantaged high school students who want to develop job skills.

Uplift Austin perfectly matches the criteria for the NLI Media Challenge,' says Josh Epstein, senior media consultant at NLI Media Group. Other contenders for the top prize in the NLI Media Challenge were the Austin Music Foundation, Extend-A-Care, GameWager Inc., Give Realty, the 'Songwriters Series' Internet TV program, Sun Dragon Martial Arts and Self Defense, and Thumtronics Inc. Gina LaMotte, founder of Uplift Austin, says: 'To be selected the winner from this strong group is an honor. The marketing resources provided by NLI Media Group will go a long way toward furthering the goals of Uplift Austin.'

Uplift Austin began its pilot project this month at the Austin Can Academy. The academy targets ninth- through 12th-graders who have dropped out of high school. The academy is housed in a nearly 70-year-old building in desperate need of repairs. Within five years, Uplift Austin plans to expand to high schools throughout Austin, transforming dozens of community sites and engaging hundreds of students. Uplift Austin intends to create a model that can replicated in other U.S. cities, thereby strengthening the 'green school' movement.

'By adopting Uplift Austin, a school creatively attends to science, math, art and career readiness while receiving immense community support and a healthy, attractive campus,' LaMotte says.

'Impoverished public schools are the most urgent and logical place to provide a healthy environment, and with our country’s growing need for environmental education and sustainable living, there are no better citizens to engage than our youth. Uplift Austin is an investment in a healthier tomorrow.'
