September 26, 2008 (FPRC) -- HOUSTON, TX -- It took 24 hours for police to identify the body of Kevin Hills and contact his father after he was hit by an 18-wheeler and dragged for more than a mile along a highway.
Just before dawn on March 13, 2008, Kevin Hills and his wife, Lisa, were standing near their vehicle on the shoulder of I-15 outside Las Vegas, NV after running out of gas. The couple had been married for four days and were on their honeymoon when tragedy struck.
The first semi truck hit Lisa as she tried to wave down help. Then a second 18-wheeler swerved off the road and took Kevin’s life. The two trucks continued, without stopping. One driver even went to a car wash in an attempt to remove the carnage from the vehicle.
The loss devastated Kevin’s father, Kenneth Hills, but he is on a mission to ensure that his son’s life was not lost in vain. After investigating truck safety regulations and interviewing countless individuals who spend many hours driving, Hills was shocked.
'Truckers have taken control of the highways. I know truckers and four-wheelers have got to get along, and we all could drive more safely. But those huge trucks should have different standards, and we’ve got to make new laws. A heavy 18-wheeler should have a slower speed limit than cars,' Kenneth Hills said.
Hills believes that tight deadlines and trimmed budgets have caused truckers to drive faster, and more dangerously. The mourning father is now on a crusade to reform the laws that govern drug-testing, inspections and truckers’ hours, and also to remove 'junk rigs' from our nation’s highways.
'I’m going to make highways safer, and I don’t care if I have to die doing it,' said Hills.
Hills hired truck accident lawyer team Jim S. Adler & Associates, a dedicated group of Texas personal injury attorneys representing victims of 18-wheeler crashes, to handle the case. Jim S. Adler & Associates also is a proponent of reform of trucking regulations.
In an effort to increase awareness of the dangers of 18-wheeler accidents and to memorialize Kevin and Lisa Hills, the truck accident attorney team has published his story, along with a video in memory of the newlywed couple.
