November 4, 2008 (FPRC) --Bangkok Hospital is now the first and only hospital in the country to perform the revolutionary new Gamma Knife surgery on patients with brain tumors.

The technology reduces mortality to zero, the length of hospital stay by more than 90% in most cases, and largely eliminates side-effects such as hearing loss, damage to surrounding brain tissue, cosmetic effects and damage to the facial nerve.

Compared to conventional open surgery, Gamma Knife surgery:
• Reduces mortality to 0% from a previous 5.3%, according to studies
• Reduces complication rates to 3.8% from around 31.2%
• Reduces the standard socioeconomic cost of tumor treatment to US$10,044 from US $34,453
• Reduces workdays lost to 8-9 from 158-160

The cost can be as little as $100 higher in some instances for Gamma Knife surgery as opposed to conventional open surgery.

As Bangkok Hospital is the only facility in the country to offer this life-saving new treatment to brain tumor sufferers, they have an Open Clinic policy for Gamma Knife surgery. Physicians from anywhere in the country, including other hospitals, may refer their patients to Bangkok Hospital for treatment.

The treatment is non-invasive: there is no incision required at all. This means that the risk of infection is reduced to zero, the risk of blood loss is reduced to zero, and that pain is significantly reduced.

Bangkok Hospital now has the technology to treat lesions as small as 1-2 millimeters, in deep areas of the brain which were previously inaccessible. The method by which the Gamma Knife works is to disrupt the DNA of the tumor cells, causing them to lose their ability to reproduce. With Gamma Knife technology, the hospital can treat:
• Brain tumors and acoustic neuromas
• Skull base lesions such as meningioma and pituitary adenoma
• Brain metastasis
• Arteriovenous malformation of the brain
• Parkinson's disease, functional disorders which cause great pain, and other movement disorders are also treatable
