March 15, 2009 (FPRC) -- Dating Site for the Mentally Ill Launched in the US
Albuquerque, March 15, 2009/ --A national dating website designed for people with mental illness has launched in the US. TrueAcceptance.com is an online dating and social networking community for all individuals coping with a mental health diagnosis.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health an estimated 26.2% of Americans 18 and older are diagnosed with some form of mental illness. These diagnoses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illness is a term used for a group of disorders causing disturbances in thinking, feeling, and relating. Some examples are depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder. Trueacceptance.com is not only a dating site, but a place to exchange information / dialogue about coping mechanisms, treatments, resources etc.
The site, which began in early 2008, saw an 81% increase in new visits during the month of February, 2009. There have been nearly six thousand visits in the last month that came from 39 different countries/territories. “Users feel comfortable with the site because they don’t have to be afraid of disclosing their illness like they would on a mainstream dating site”, reports Elizabeth Barrett, co-owner of Trueacceptance.com.
Trueacceptance.com is unique because it allows for a stigma free community by which individuals can converse with each other openly. “There are a lack of places that people with these diagnoses can seek out socialization due to stigmas and preconceived notions of people with mental illness”, reports Barrett. As one user reports, "I knew that I wouldn’t be stigmatized, I love it." –Tami
This site is designed for those people coping with mental health challenges in their lives. Each profile is meticulously screened in an attempt to create a database of members with a sincere desire to make connections with others in our community.
