Limerick Engineering Firm Secures International Standards In Medical And Aerospace Sectors
A County Limerick sub-contract precision engineering company has been awarded two prestigious international standards.

July 29, 2009 (FPRC) -- The Tánaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan T.D. today officially awarded two international standards to a Limerick sub-contract precision engineering company enabling it to expand into the overseas aerospace and medical markets.
Raheen-based Takumi Precision Engineering was established in 1998, during which time it has grown its workforce to 45 people and accumulated annual revenues of approaching almost EUR4 million. In recent years, the company has focused its activity on the medical device-manufacturing sector and has gained invaluable experience working with multinational companies in the orthopaedic and cardiovascular field. Takumi currently manufactures medical implants, surgical instruments, production aids and other devices for multinational companies in this sector, both in Ireland and abroad.
“In order to develop our capabilities and to offer a higher level of service to the medical device sector, Takumi has implemented the medical device quality manufacturing standard, ISO13485”, explained company co-founder and Managing Director Gerry Reynolds. He continued: “This is a very exacting quality standard in terms of traceability, workmanship and staff training. Considerable preparatory work was required in terms of ensuring that Takumi`s internal procedures complied with this standard. The most important factor was increased awareness of the requirements of this standard from the least experienced operators through to management and directors.”
Meanwhile, the Tánaiste today congratulated Takumi on also securing certification to the aerospace quality system standard AS9100. Takumi is now the only company in Ireland to hold both AS9100 and ISO13485 standards.
Takumi has been engaged in Aerospace work for a number of years and is a supplier to companies such as Hamilton Substrand (Shannon) and Maydown Precision (Derry). As in the case of the medical standard, AS9100 is an internationally recognised compliance standard that guarantees that work carried out in Takumi complies with exacting aerospace standards.
According to Mr Reynolds: “Takumi management are confident that the acquisition of these standards will enable Takumi to seek out work internationally. Takumi is the only company in Ireland to hold both standards. The aerospace and medical sectors have been identified by management as growth areas that are not as exposed to the global downturn as other manufacturing areas. We can provide solutions from component manufacture, through to supply chain management, taking care of all validation and regulatory requirements. With Takumi, as the manufacturing partner, our customers leave supply chain issues with us and can focus on growing their market share.”
Mr. Reynolds paid tribute to Enterprise Ireland for the support it has provided Takumi throughout its development over the last 12 years. He commented: “This support has ranged from networking events, developing market knowledge to assistance in attending trade shows. Support has been received in the vital area of staff training and development as well as on our ongoing Research and Development projects. Most importantly, Enterprise Ireland’s unrivalled overseas network is hugely beneficial for Irish SMEs wishing to export or expand into international markets. Takumi`s plan for ongoing expansion is to acquire work throughout Europe and beyond and develop an international reputation as a centre of excellence in its field.”

Takumi is actively involved in R&D in conjunction with its customers and is continuously bringing new products on stream. The company has expanded year on year and has been profitable in each of its financial years to date.
