Board games continue to grow in popularity and sales year-on-year during the recession with sales increasing by 23.5% in 2008 to (US)$808 million and projected to an even higher level this year.

The Serious Board Gamer Gift Guide on the other hand highlights small publishers - lesser well known board games released in 2008 and 2009. These board games are much more difficult to find due to their smaller print-runs and lower publicity budgets of their producers. Games in this list include award winners like Lock’n Load Publishing’s Band of Heroes and cult hit God Dice.
