November 28, 2009 (FPRC) -- The long, dry indian summer in Andalucia has allowed top British climber Silvia Fitzpatrick to continue to climb some more hard routes before the winter rains arrive. Silvia quickly followed on her redpoint of the very hard Golpe de Calor (8b) with free ascents of two routes with the magic grade of 8a - these being Vibraciones Positiva at Loja and Campo Amargo at Archidona.
Vibraciones Positiva is a long 35m stamina route on the Zorrerhas Baja section of the limestone massif. It features a low, hard technical crux followed by long reaches on mainly good holds - but a couple of the reachs are really long and caused Silvia a few problems as her feet inevitably kept cutting loose. The resulting falls were long and impressive.
The whole crag was in perfect condition after so much dry weather and its position at 1000m and northerly direction have made it perfect during the recent hot weather.
The second 8a was Campo Amargo at Archidona. This route is a classic trip in upside down land that is typical of this crag - steep and powerful climbing on the underside of a massive roof.
Silvia also managed a fast ascents of several routes in the sierra behind Villanueva del Rosario on the Ventana and El Corral Walls. These undocumented routes look fantastic from the few photos that are available and Silvia confirmed their quality. There is more information on these climbing areas on her website.
The remarkable fact is that all these routes have been climbed during the odd spare few hours when not looking after clients on climbing courses. Silvia runs the Rock Climbing Company which provides rock climbing holidays and courses in southern Spain - Silvia has only taken 10 days off since the start of the year and yet is climbing better than ever
