Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson Ferries Will Be Transporting 200 Travelers Daily During the 2010 Key West High Season
With the official start of Key West's high season this week, travelers to the country's southernmost city will be able to travel every day of the week of one of two luxury ferries that transport up to 200 passengers and 12 campers out to the remote islands of the Dry Tortugas located 68 miles off the coast of Key West Florida

December 27, 2009 (FPRC) -- The official start of Key West's high season is Christmas Day. After that, for a full five months, Key West sees more visitors than during any other time of the year. This season, the Dry Tortugas Information Center will continue providing Key West visitors with the chance to get on one of two state-of-the-art passenger ferries that head out daily to the remote islands of the Dry Tortugas.
Located 68 miles to the west of Key West Florida (about a 2 hour and fifteen minute ferry ride), the Dry Tortugas are a collection of isolated and primitive islands that house the historic, Civil War-era Fort Jefferson. The islands have played crucial roles in the history of the country due to their convenient location along trade routes and due to the construction of the massive Fort Jefferson which was used as a war prison.
The islands of the Dry Tortugas were designated a national park and today, two luxury ferries from Key West Florida transport 200 passengers out to this most unique of national parks. The Dry Tortugas Information Center, which runs DryTortugasInfo.com, provides travelers with information on the islands as well as how to book spots on the ferries out to the island.
"We're really looking forward to the 2010 season," expresses Linette Lazaro, a reservations agent at the Dry Tortugas Information Center. "Last year was a lot of fun and really busy for us but we really think this next high season is going to be one of our busiest yet."
Travelers can also camp in the Dry Tortugas in the designated camping area just south of Fort Jefferson. Campers can spend up to three nights on the islands. Camping on the Dry Tortugas is considered "primitive" camping, meaning campers must bring everything they need with them (including all food and water). Camping spots on the two ferries are highly limited with each ferry only having enough room for six campers a day. Campers can bring equipment such as kayaks or snorkeling gear for a Key West snorkeling adventure.
