January 4, 2010 (FPRC) -- Students who chronically come late to school disrupt the learning environment for the other students; they require more clerical work for the school’s office staff and, most importantly, cost teaching time for everyone. In fact, the more time a student is late or absent from class has a direct effect on a school's achievement and academic performance on standardized tests. There is a direct correlation between chronic school tardiness and later chronic tardiness in the workforce.
Teenage students are very sensitive to 'fairness' issues and will notice if you apply rules to students but not teachers. Students will also notice if your school is not keeping track of tardiness. So let them know that you care and are aware when it comes to them being late or absent from class. If your students see that if being late or missing a few minutes of class only means missing 'chat time' with their friends than they won’t see the point in being on time. So make sure to start classes and lesson plans on time, every time to prevent this from becoming a regular habit. Chronic tardiness, like school violence, can also be a form of rebellious behavior, signaling a problem at home or 'bullying' in school. So find out what is causing the student to be late before punishing or reprimanding them. Then address the problem accordingly with family counseling and implementing positive behavior support (PBS) strategies.
