January 15, 2010 (FPRC) -- PASSAIC, NJ - Mario Gonzalez, Library Director of the Passaic Public Library in New Jersey has been elected as a councilor-at-large for the American Library Association (ALA). Gonzalez's three year term begins at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston.
Gonzalez was elected to the position by the general membership. More than 67,000 library officials from around the country make up the general membership of the ALA, which helps promote library service and librarianship. The midwinter meeting takes place January 15-18, 2010 and guests will have the opportunity to attend over 200 discussion groups and over 2000 committee meetings covering a variety of topics relevant to America's libraries and librarians.
"I feel honored to be chosen as a councilor-at-large for the ALA. I've spent the last 39 years in libraries around the country and this is a way for me to give back to all the people who have helped me throughout my career. The ALA is an important organization that helps America's librarians ensure people all over the country have access to books and learning and I'm pleased to help the ALA further its cause," said Mario Gonzalez, Library Director in Passaic, New Jersey.
In addition to his work with the ALA, Gonzalez was recently elected to serve his fourth term as treasurer of the Orangeburg Library Board of Trustees.
But there's more to Mario Gonzalez, librarian of Passaic. In October 2009, Gonzalez was given a 'Certificate of Appreciation' by Dr. Alex D. Blanco, Mayor of Passaic in honor of his support and dedication in organizing the city-sponsored Mi Tierra Exhibit. The exhibit highlighted Mexican art from Oaxaca.
He also serves as vice president of the Passaic Rotary Club. Recently, the Rotary Club organized a dictionary drive for the third grade students in the City of Passaic school system. Over 2000 students received dictionaries from the club throughout a two day period.
"It's important to me to give back to my community and my involvement with the Rotary Club gives me that opportunity. Giving the third graders in Passaic dictionaries will go a long way to improving their vocabularies. It is my personal hope that these dictionaries help foster a love of words and reading that the students keep for the rest of their lives," said Gonzalez.
