January 20, 2010 (FPRC) -- Industrial and construction companies, professionals and hobbyists have been challenged for decades to cut smaller pieces from a large linear material stock (bar, pipe, beam, etc.) that comes in a standard size. This is so-called “length cutting optimization” problem and it has been intensively studied for decades by scientists and engineers.
Trying to solve this problem manually results in time spending and only ends up with a far from optimal solution that produces a lot of material waste. The variety of software available that can addresses the length cutting optimization problem with a much higher productivity and material utilization rate incurs significant time and money to find, compare, purchase and learn how to use.

"Almost everybody knows Microsoft Excel" affirms Denis Smirnov, marketing director of Optimalon Software. "It's an application which has been successfully used by hundreds of millions users around the globe as an inventory, financial and order processing tool. Our new product - 1DCutX - brings the length cutting optimization functionality into Excel and combines two important features. First, it makes the complex numerical optimization so simple and intuitive that anyone can do it in a couple of minutes. Second, it takes away all hassles involved with third-party software.”

1DCutX works with Excel, as an Excel menu item or ribbon element. Since users don't need to import, export, save or load any additional files, all the data is saved within the workbook effectively eliminating any potential errors. Users may choose to optimize according to either waste or both waste and cost minimization scenarios. Additional parameters, such as saw kerf, minimal waste size and completion mode, help users account for the features and limitations of the utilized cutting hardware.
