February 11, 2010 -- Citizen Bean, a subscription-based coffee club that promotes organic, fair trade and small-batch coffee roasters (http://www.zokacoffee.com), selected Zoka Coffee Roaster and Tea Company as February's featured roaster. Citizen Bean highlights one artisan roaster a month and delivers their sustainable, complex signature blends and single origin roasts to coffee club subscribers, many of whom are culinary enthusiasts and fair trade advocates.

This month, they will feature Zoka's Espresso Paladino
(http://secure.zokacoffee.com/coffee/cat/espresso/RCW-ESP.html) and Organic Tattoosh Blend (http://secure.zokacoffee.com/coffee/cat/zoka-blends/RCW-ORGTAT.html) coffees.

"We couldn't be more thrilled that Citizen Bean selected Zoka Coffee for their Roaster of the Month," says Zoka's head roastmaster, John Battaglia. "We strive to connect the coffee our customers drink to its farmers – Citizen Bean shares our vision and we're honored they chose to share our coffee with their devotees who can truly appreciate it," he said.

Citizen Bean, an eco-friendly project of Bean Capers, Inc. of San Francisco features one smallbatch roaster every month. The coffee must meet stringent criteria to be featured in Citizen Bean: it has to come from a small-batch roaster and has to be recognized in the culinary world for its high quality. "Zoka have been on the short list of quality third wave roasters for years," said Mal Stearns at Citizen Bean. "The third wave consists of roasters involved in mentoring small farming co-ops to ensure their quality and sustainability."

Every coffee Citizen Bean sends to its subscribers comes with a special pairing. The Zoka roasts will arrive with a sweet European brown sugar cube to bring out caramel nuances in the brews.

Zoka Coffee opened in 1996, and has three Seattle-area coffee shops and an online retail store. Their attention to detail at every step sets them apart from other mass roasters. "We're involved in the process from the beginning– we travel to different growing regions, sampling different coffees from farmers who share our passion for quality," Battaglia said. "We make sure we have a direct and good relationship with our farmers and can trace each coffee back to its source."
