Purple Heart Recipient, Iraq Veteran Amputee to Run Los Angeles Marathon on Behalf of U.S.VETS
Mervin Roxas, U.S. Marine Corps veteran amputee, will be running in the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 21 on behalf of United States Veterans Initiative (U.S.VETS). U.S.VETS is America’s largest non-profit dedicated to providing comprehensive services to all veterans in need.

February 19, 2010 (FPRC) -- U.S. Marine Corps Iraq veteran and amputee, Mervin Roxas, will be running in the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 21 on behalf of United States Veterans Initiative (U.S.VETS), America’s largest non-profit dedicated to providing comprehensive services to all veterans in need, including those recently separated from Afghanistan and Iraq; female veterans, unemployed and disabled veterans – and their families.
During Roxas’ service in Iraq with the 3rd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment, he lost his left arm and suffered severe damage to his face when his convoy was struck by an IED. After returning home Roxas was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and service to our country. While recovering from his injuries Roxas received an outpouring of support from friends, family and a variety of organizations, which played a crucial role in his successful transition into civilian life, compelling him to give back.
“I have no regrets and would do it all over again to serve my country,” said Corporal Roxas, “I am running the marathon to show the importance of organizations like U.S.VETS that help veterans get back on their feet.”
Roxas is attending California State University Fullerton, pursuing a degree in history with the goal of becoming a teacher. He currently works as a life skills coach for Easter Seals providing assistance to adults with autism and other disabilities.
Other veterans joining Mervin in support of veterans are Ray Holland and Oliver Kay. Ray Holland, an Army Veteran, is a case manager for U.S.VETS. The 2010 LA Marathon will be Ray’s fifth marathon. Oliver Kay is an Iraq Veteran who served with the British Army, 1st Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.
