April 14, 2010 (FPRC) -- Richard and his wife, Renee, met as 15 year olds in 10th grade and graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh. Renee, the more sensible person in the marriage, will make the 1200 mile journey by a non-stop jet and will arrive in Pittsburgh on May 19th. Richard will also arrive on the 19th. But his journey will take 23 days, assuming no barriers such as tornados, washed out roads and minor accidents.
The website for the Taylor Allderdice reunion has had an announcement for four months asking if any graduates would like to join Richard for all or a part of the 1,200 mile journey. Richard stated that he has had "no takers."
This is one in a series of cross-country bike rides for Richard: Los Angeles to Boston(3,500 miles); New Orleans to Minneapolis(1,700 miles); and, northern Oregon to southern California(1,600 miles). When asked what was his favorite bicycle trip, Richard responded, "the next one."
The Sagemont School serving students from pre-school through high school graduation has a strong athletic program. Richard is using this trip as a fundraiser for the athletics department. The fundraiser is being headed up by Sagemont 11th grader, Max Chenkin, Boys Basketball Team Manager. Contributions will go towards the purchase of new athletic equipment, uniforms and other needs for the upcoming school year. Donors can participate online
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=112309618784539&ref=ts. The first $500 donation came from Richard.
Richard will leave his home in Fort Lauderdale at 6am on April 28th. His goal for reaching the front door of Taylor Allderdice high School is May 19th at 3pm.
