August 11, 2010 (FPRC) -- Running from 8th to 16th October 2010, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival sees hundreds of festival participants performing extreme acts of faith to their Gods while maintaining a strict vegetarian diet.
The festival dates back to 1835 when a Chinese opera company visited the island but was struck down with illness. To help cure the sickness they performed various rituals and committed themselves to not eating meat to honour their Gods. The sickness then went away and observers have since embraced the event and its traditions.
Visitors to the island staying in cheap Phuket hotels can witness devotees of the festival performing acts of self torture to highlight their faith to their Gods. This includes thrusting objects such as knives and skewers through their own cheeks and tongues and walking barefooted on hot coals.
It is believed that the worshippers are able to perform these astonishing acts by inviting their Gods into their bodies and harnessing supernatural powers.
Less drastic members of the community will take part in the festival by abstaining from meat, sex and alcohol for ten days. Participants believe that by not eating meat, animals are not killed which therefore saves a life and in turn bestows merit and good luck on themselves.
