November 26, 2010 (FPRC) -- According to an article published on OffTheGridNews.com entitled “Family Thanksgiving Dinner Could Soon Cost $826, Experts Predict” the rising costs of food may put such traditional feasts out of reach for the majority of Americans. It may be hard to wrap your head around it, but Gerald Adams, president of the National Inflation Association, has warned that the prices for the food sitting on your Thanksgiving table could easily amount to a mortgage payment.
Take for instance that turkey that’s sitting at the center of your table, the price per pound jumped 28% over last year and with certain government initiatives now in place those skyrocketing prices are sure to continue.
So what government initiatives could be a threat to your Thanksgiving meal? Just take a look at the push for alternative sources for fuel. One of the most short-sighted initiatives to be put in place is the call for higher ethanol production. While ethanol production was boosted as a means of relieving our dependence on foreign oil it has quickly become the main culprit in rising food prices.
Of course corn is used for ethanol production and with the continued support of the government this ethanol is finding its way into more and more gas tanks of cars. This in turn has led many corn farmers to dedicate much of their crop to these ethanol programs, obviously cutting the supply available for more traditional uses.
While corn may help your car run, it’s also the main source of feed for turkeys and with a lower supply comes a higher price. It doesn’t take an economist to know that the rising costs associated with raising turkeys will then be past down to the consumer. The OTGN article also points out that it’s not just turkeys that rely on corn; many of the other items sitting on your table have corn as an ingredient.
What all of this equates to, as pointed out in the article, is a Thanksgiving dinner for ten soon topping the $825.00 mark. Its mind numbing but the article lays out the facts that support the belief that within a few short years the cost of a Thanksgiving meal could rise 1800%.
All is not doom and gloom for your Thanksgiving meal though as the article also points to ways in which you can curb your costs and fight inflation, most effectively through the growing of your own vegetable garden. Bill Heid, president of Solutions from Science, points to the significance of tending to your own garden saying, “Growing your own food is one of the best ways to provide for your family in an inflationary climate.”
Skeptics might contend that with inflation will come rising costs to seeds for such gardens and while that may be true there is even an alternative to these traditional seeds. The article on OTGN also highlights one of Heid’s most popular products, the Survival Seed Bank, a collection of 22 varieties of valuable non-hybrid, non-GMO seeds.
Many Americans are familiar with the added stress of rising food prices and the prospect of further increases should be incentive enough to adopt an alternative. According to the National Gardening Association (NGA) a vegetable garden can save a family at least $500 a year and that is being conservative.
