Election Candidates Should Have Say In FF Leadership Contest - Dr. John Hillery

January 22, 2011 (FPRC) -- Clare Fianna Fail General Election candidate Dr. John Hillery says he has requested the Parliamentary Party Chairman and Party Secretary to consider the views of election candidates in the process of nominating a new leader of Fianna Fail.
Dr. Hillery’s request follows the decision by Taoiseach Brian Cowen to resign the party leadership.
He said: “All Fianna Fail General Election candidates across Ireland pledged to contest the forthcoming election on behalf of a party led by Taoiseach Brian Cowen. As a result of today’s announcement, it is imperative that those who will be canvassing alongside the next leader are given the opportunity to have their say in his or her appointment.
“I have contacted Fianna Fáil party chairman John Browne and party Secretary Sean Dorgan and have asked them to raise this proposal within the Parliamentary Party as a matter of urgency. Fianna Fail election candidates throughout the country will no doubt share my view that the decision making process relating to the appointment of a successor to Brian Cowen should be one that includes the views of those who will represent the party during the next Dáil term. As a party we are at a critical juncture and therefore the opinions of the party’s representatives in every county of Ireland should be listened to and considered in the coming days”, added Dr. Hillery, who said he would be supporting Michael Martin's bid for the leadership.
