Brooklyn, NY (FPRC) April 24, 2011 -- In the November 2010 issue, the Journal of the American Dental Association’s cover story article addressed for the first time in the archives of dental history the role of dental professionals providing their services to help the overweight and obese to regain control over their compulsive eating habits and the serious health consequences that often attend it.

Dr. Rothstein’s documentary is primer for dental professionals who are prepared to help the obese. It airs June 7, 2011. It was produced to bring to the attention of dental professionals the protocol for providing this service as well as making it broadly known to the public at large in order that they may become aware that dental professionals are willing and able to help them overcome compulsive eating habits.

OJW for weight loss is a behavior modification method of treatment for a serious, social, psychological and physiological problem that can help carefully selected, overweight or obese persons to begin regaining a measure of control over their excessive, sometimes compulsive eating habits.

Orthodontic Jaw Wiring was invented ten years ago by Brooklyn NY orthodontist Dr. Ted Rothstein who has provided it to 150 patients as well as presented its main features and benefits to his dental peers here and abroad.

OJW consists of braces exactly like the braces orthodontists uses to straighten teeth. However, they are placed only on the upper and lower, right and left, canine and premolars--twelve teeth in all. The dentist can then interlaces the upper and lower teeth in such a way as to limit how far apart the patient will be permitted to open their mouth. This position is called the 'physiologic normal resting position' of the jaw. Consequently, the patient is limited to having a liquid diet, thereby preventing them from eating the solid foods that are the most culpable in causing excessive weight gain. The jaw joints and speech remain healthy and normal. See how it looks at http://www.drted.com/OJWPressRelease.htm

You have only to Google 'OJW' or 'Orthodontic Jaw Wiring' or visit his web site, http://www.drted.com to realize how ardent and passionate Dr. Rothstein is about this new service which he alone provides at present--a fact which he deems lamentable and attributes to the fact that dental professionals were never given the sanction by their parent organization the ADA and many states have been slow to consider weight control services within the scope of dentistry.

Critics of the procedure comment with argument that weight loss is followed by weight regain when the OJW is removed. Dr. Rothstein responds: 'Is there a single weight control method in which this recurrent problem has been conquered'?

The documentary is brutally honest. Indeed the patient who requested the OJW placed in her mouth was unable to tolerate it. However, the public is entitled to know such information about the medications and treatments they elect to have their doctors provide them precisely so they can make an intelligent choice whether to take them or not.

The controversy surrounding OJW for weigh control was explored in a round table article that appeared in Orthodontic Products 2005. [Google 'Orthodontic Jaw Wiring controversy.']

Dr. Rothstein is confident that more and more dentists will emerge who recognize that it is their right and obligation to assist the obese many of whom are in despair over their condition and would gladly have a dentist help them if he or she had the expertise and instruments to do so.
In summary, Orthodontic Jaw Wiring is a non-invasive weight control method for patients who have trepidations about taking any kind of medications, whose side-effects are unknown, and for those who have dread of undergoing invasive surgical procedures which could lead to their demise. Dr. Rothstein’s documentary is primer for dental professionals who are prepared to help the obese. It airs June 7, 2011. A few telling comments from patients include: Natalie -- 'You can always give my number to potential or current OJW patients'; Apryl--'I can’t ever thank you enough for helping me lose the 50 pounds and keeping it off almost 2 full years!'

Dr. Rothstein holds a PhD in Physical Anthropology with a specialty in Dentofacial growth and development. His web site is rated #1 in the field for currency, diversity and richness of content. He has been specialist in Orthodontics since 1973.
