April 29, 2011 (FPRC) -- The Royal Wedding has captured the imaginations of people all over the world, which means there has also been a surge in the market for Royal Wedding memorabilia, both new and old.
Portmeirion Potteries is one of many china and pottery manufacturers to design and release a limited edition Royal Wedding collection to capitalize on Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day. Through their Royal Worcester brand, which they acquired in 2009, they have produced a variety of items from a £400 lion head vase to a £15 china mug.
Portmeirion has produced memorabilia to mark royal and other significant occasions since it was established in 1960, and one of the largest Portmeirion Pottery collections to come up for auction on eBay in many years includes some of these pieces.
Richard James, a buyer and seller of vintage china and pottery, was fortunate to be offered the private collection as a single lot, and has released many of the finest pieces for auction.
“I’ve been buying and selling antique and vintage china and pottery for a number of years but it was a surprise to be offered such a large collection of Portmeirion pottery,” said Mr James. “There are over 400 separate lots including Royal Wedding and Jubilee memorabilia. Royal Weddings don't always have a happy ending but the collectibles live on"
Items include mugs to celebrate Prince Charles and Lady Diana's wedding in 1981 and Princess Anne's marriage to Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, both designed by Portmeirion Potteries' founder Susan Williams-Ellis.
With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee taking place next year, you may be more interested in a tankard created for her Silver Jubilee in 1977, or one designed by John Cuffley to celebrate the investiture of the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, in 1969.
