September 18, 2011 (FPRC) -- The UK has seen many events cancelled from event centers like the NEC, Olympia, ExCe; have all seen shows cancelled for one reason or another.
The UK has seen a change in the way that many companies advertise and market themselves, mainly a shift from traditional forms of advertising (such as magazines and billboards) to more online forms of advertising such as PPC and website development.
The events industry has been effected by this, not just the organisers of events (in having to cancel shows and exhibitions) but the exhibition stand designers that are helping companies to showcase themselves at the events.
The UK has over 600 exhibition stand designers ranging from online companies that sell smaller pop up stands up to the larger full service stand designers that work with big stands costing in excess of £200,000.
Most of these businesses have seen a shift in the way that businesses are approaching events, the end result being lower profit margins.
Anne Richards of Marketing Quotes commented 'some exhibition stand designers have actually closed due to the drop in the industry. True that exhibitions are expensive things and I guess if clients are not seeing a return, then they may well choose not to attend and opt for other forms of marketing such as online advertising'.
Events can be very expensive, considering the cost of the stand, the staff out of the office, accommodation, freebies, food etc.
Anne Richards added 'an event for 3 days can end up costing a business over a million pounds, so if companies find that the delegate numbers drop, then that million pounds could be best spent elsewhere'.
Exhibitions have been considered a salespersons day out, a chance to get out of the office, meet up with friends, pick up some goodies for the kids and to have a few beers. As companies have opted to keep the sales people at work (and just look at attendees websites instead of visiting the exhibitions' visitor numbers have dropped and events have cancelled.
The main sector that has seen cancellations has been the construction exhibitions, mainly as construction companies have chosen to save money on the exhibitions and use other forms of marketing that are more likely to produce results.
Marcel Blackburn of Marketing Quotes pointed out 'the construction sector was expected to be hit and many marketing agencies that dealt exclusively with the industry have closed; we do expect as we move into 2012 that further cancellations in events will occur'.
Exhibition stand designers are in a difficult situation as far as the future is concerned; as companies are still nervous about the cost benefit ratio of exhibitions and certainly as the internet is a cheaper solution, more are moving their marketing to online media.
