October 17, 2011 (FPRC) -- PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA - The Lakeville and Savage orthodontics office of Cosmopolitan Orthodontics will host its yearly Halloween candy buy-back program in November. Patients can donate Halloween candy at either Cosmopolitan Orthodontics location on Nov. 3, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., says Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Shakopee orthodontist. The sweet treats and toothbrushes donated by Cosmopolitan will be shipped to U.S. troops serving overseas.

This is the third year that Bonvino, an orthodontics for adults and childrens, has overseen the buy-back initiative, which helps remove the temptation to eat candies that could cause damage to orthodontic brackets and wires by giving patients a source to which to donate those potentially harmful candies. When it comes to orthodontics, braces can be debonded by chewy caramels, hard candies and sticky foods, Bonvino said.

Cosmopolitan Orthodontics developed the campaign to accomplish a couple of goals: keeping patients from eating foods that would damage their appliances, and doing something nice for U.S. Troops, she said.

"We invite patients to give up all the sticky, chewy candies that aren't good to eat when you have braces, and give them to people who can safely eat them," said Bonvino. "What continues to shock us year after year is that this program brings out the giving spirit in our patients. Patients donate candies that are safe for them to eat, but they choose to give them to our military personnel instead."

Candies that Bonvino wants patients to donate include taffy, caramel and chewy sweets that could loosen or break appliances. "Our objective is to keep teeth looking great, so we are sure to send our military personnel toothbrushes along with the candy," Bonvino said. "We want them to enjoy the candy, but to maintain oral health as well?
