October 26, 2011 (FPRC) -- WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA - The makers of Mavenlive, a exercise prescription software, recently announced the creation a complex rules engine that makes it possible to conduct a syntax-based search of an electronic medical record. Complications in the retrieval of information from electronic medical records has been recognized as a serious issue for quite a while, said Dr. Jay Winburn, president of Prognition Corp.

Due to the capability of storing them in a digital format, an electronic medical record can be recalled quickly. But records of 100 pages or more in length can create an obstacle for a healthcare professional who does not have the time needed to read through the document, Winburn said. That means important information located in the document could be missed.

"It is an unfortunate truth that this happens on occasion," said Chris Metcalfe, vice president of technical development for the company that specializes in PT rehabilitation programs. "Searching a document according to a keyword isn't viewed as useful because search results tend to be overly general."

Getting general results means effort must be put into sifting through the returned results. "Clinicians and their employees and coworkers don’t tend to have the luxury of time," Metcalfe said.

The future that healthcare policy makers see for physical therapy exercises software is that it could become part of a complete electronic medical record that gives patients more control over their own health care, Metcalfe said. Collecting and interpreting EMR information easily is an element of this process. Syntax-based search enables the logical "context" surrounding the information to be assessed in choosing pertinent information.

Mavenlive's rules engine also enables information that was retrieved to be interpreted in language appropriate to those viewing it, whether that is a patient or a professional health care worker. "This advancement makes Mavenlive quite a robust physical therapy software solution and a leader in all of healthcare," Winburn said.
