November 16, 2011 (FPRC) -- Demon's Cycle Inc., a custom motorcycle builder and custom motorcycle parts supplier, issued a poll to discover which type of handlebars are preferred by custom motorcycle enthusiasts. Given the choice, 54% responded with a preference for ape hanger handlebars rather than T-bars.

Ape hanger handlebars get their name because of the way they rise far above their mounting point meaning that riders must reach up to use them. Although some riders say they can sometimes be uncomfortable it is almost universally agreed that ape hangers are more stylish for choppers.

”I have put apes on every bike I have ever owned and I love them, I feel like apes are more comfortable because with apes and forward controls you could be in a nice laidback comfy position but Drag bars/T-bars will put you a bit more forward, unless you get some pull back risers.” said a chopper enthusiast from Florida. “Personally I would go for comfort and my Harley is like a woman, I fix her up and show her off!”

The remaining 46% of those polled prefer T-bars with most agreeing that T-bars are more comfortable and give a more natural feel while riding. Although T-bars don't match the chopper style, they do come in various rises from 4 to 10 inches and the height can be chosen to match the bikes stance and the rider's position.

Many of the riders agree that the t-bar handlebars are better for handling, and allow you to ride a lot longer than those who own ape hangers on their bikes.

“It is true that T-bar handlebars are better for handling and are easier for longer rides.” said Tom Steinbacher, owner of Demon’s Cycle. “But ultimately, you can't beat the style and look of ape hangers.”
