Author Douglas Winslow Cooper, Ph.D., to Discuss Ting and I: A Memoir
Douglas Winslow Cooper, Ph.D., husband of a quadriplegic multiple sclerosis patient, has written a memoir about their interracial love affair of nearly fifty years’ duration, which has withstood nineteen years of separation, some racial intolerance, and twenty years of his wife’s increasing disability. His first public talk about the work will be December 15.

December 7, 2011 (FPRC) -- Walden, NY - Dr. Douglas Winslow Cooper, author, caregiver, and retired physicist, will give his first public talk on his recently published book, Ting and I: A Memoir of Love, Courage, and Devotion. Dr. Cooper’s presentation will be held Thursday, December 15, 7-8 p.m. at the Josephine-Louise Library, 5 Scofield Street, Walden, NY.
Dr. Cooper’s wife, Tina Su Cooper, has been bedridden at home for seventeen years, quadriplegic and ventilator-dependent for the past seven, due to multiple sclerosis. The Coopers have benefited from around-the-clock nursing that Dr. Cooper manages. The book’s goal is to inspire and aid others in comparable situations. Dr. Cooper says “Our memoir shows the importance of love and loyalty in marriage and the value of human life, even life lived with severe disability.” "Further," he adds, "lessons learned in managing our home care are described."
The book has a Foreword by Richard F. Walker, MD, internist and pulmonologist in Middletown, NY, who wrote, “…it is a celebration of optimism over despair by two people passionately committed to one another….” Dr. Walker says, “It is an antidote to the news.”
Dr. Cooper will summarize the memoir, read excerpts from it, discuss quadriplegic care at home, and share his view of the strengths and weaknesses of self-publishing, including electronic publishing through Amazon’s Kindle Direct service. He will be accompanied by his wife, Tina Su Cooper [nee Su Ting-ting], and they will answer questions about the book and about their lives together. His memoir is dedicated to his wife, "the light of my life."
Dr. Cooper’s degrees are in physics (A.B., Cornell; M.S., Penn State) and engineering (Ph.D., Harvard). He served on the faculty of the Harvard School of Public Health and is a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology. He has written over 100 technical articles.
