December 13, 2011 (FPRC) -- This countdown with a difference begins by each person holding twelve grapes. Traditionally, grapes were used to symbolise Spain’s winemaking industry, and when the countdown begins to the chimes of the Town Hall bells of Seville one grape is eaten at each chime.
At the twelfth and final chime the whole of La Plaza Nueva bursts into cheering and song and dancing in the street commences, giving the city a carnival feel. This charming and old event is attended by hundreds of local people and their families as well as government officials and visitors to Seville.
The party atmosphere is certainly helped along by flowing wine, singing and camaraderie as well as a hail of unused grapes. Then follows a spectacular firework display and if this is not enough celebration, when the party in La Plaza Nueva is over the all-night fiestas in the surrounding areas are just beginning.
