"Dukes" reference guide author plans October signing

The author of a reference guide to the TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard" will sign copies of the book in the town where the show was born, Covington, Georgia.

September 7, 2006 (FPRC) -- Author Billie Rae Bates will sign copies of her "Dukes of Hazzard" reference guide, "Them Dukes! Them Dukes!" in Covington, Georgia, on Sunday, October 1.

The signing will be part of Covington's Southern Cruisers Classic Car Show, which begins at 10 a.m. and runs throughout the day in the town's historic Square. Bates will appear near the A Touch of Country shop (which houses its own unique "Dukes of Hazzard" museum) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

"Covington is the birthplace of 'The Dukes,'" Bates says, "and a place I've become rather fond of. Since the first five episodes of the show were filmed there in late 1978, there has been a large fan following of the series there, even decades later." Bates, who lives not far away in Metro Atlanta, was able to conduct a lot of her research for "Them Dukes! Them Dukes!" in the Covington, Conyers and Oxford areas, where the bright-orange General Lee first roared along the countryside.

"Them Dukes! Them Dukes!" is a compendium that includes a cast list, character guide, episode guide, information on each of the show's stars, a tour of the original Georgia filming sites, a guide to the show's extensive merchandise and more. Released in January of this year, the trade paperback sells for $16 on Amazon.com and other e-tailers, and it's also available at A Touch of Country's "Dukes" display. A second print edition was just released in August and added 42 pages to the volume, including more information on the show's Georgia roots.

"When I was a teenager in the 1980s," Bates says, "I always wondered what it would be like to live in Hazzard County. Now I practically do! It's amazing how much of rural Georgia still feels like the dusty roads where the Dukes once rode."

Bates, a veteran of the daily newspaper business, spent seven years of her career in Detroit, as an editor, writer and page designer for The Detroit News and as an editor at the corporate headquarters of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
