January 23, 2013 (FPRC) -- The new plans form part of the strategy to provide thousands of new homes to help ease the current housing shortage in the UK, especially in and around London and the South East of England. The new plans will also help to provide further affordable housing for sale and rent to help families, couples and single residents who are struggling to find homes that are affordable.
The changes are being introduced so that developers no longer need to apply for planning permission to local authorities in order to convert office buildings into apartments. Currently, planning permission to convert office and commercial premises into homes can cost a great deal of money and is a lengthy process with no guarantee that planning permission will be given.
It is forecast that up to 100,000 new homes will be created as part of the new planning reforms in the UK, with 40,000 of those being available in London. There has been an all-time low in building new housing during the past two years which has impacted the amount of affordable homes and new homes for sale that are available to buy and rent.
To meet the housing shortfall would mean building 250,000 new homes per year, however less than 100,000 new homes were built to satisfy demand during 2012. Other plans to help the housing shortage are to identify further brown field sites that can be used to create new developments and affordable housing for families desperate to find a home. The Government has already indicated that up to two million acres of green field building land could be identified and used to build more homes in the future.
