September 16, 2010 (FPRC) -- On August 30 more than 120 San Gabriel, California police officers and department supporters arrived early at the San Gabriel Country Club for the second annual “Badges of Courage” golf tournament and banquet held by the San Gabriel Police Officer’s Association (SGPOA). Each participant’s goal for the day had two parts: First, raise money and awareness for a long list of San Gabriel charities, and second, win one of the sparkling crystal awards on display at the club house.

Custom Glass Etching of Los Angeles created the crystal awards specifically for the event and provided them to the SGPOA at a reduced cost. First, second and third place teams earned one of the crystal recognition awards. Four San Gabriel City Firefighters took first place. Players who shot closest to the pin and longest drive also received awards.

The money raised through the event went to La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center, West San Gabriel Valley YMCA, Rio Hondo Police Academy “Law Enforcement Memorial” Fund and other local groups dedicated to improving the quality of life for San Gabriel residents.

The SGPOA has already scheduled another golf tournament for October 2011 and intends to raise even more for the community. Jack Vrtar, Custom Glass Etching president, says he’ll happily provide the crystal awards yet again next year.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve provided our crystal awards and other recognition awards to local and national non-profit organizations,” said Vrtar. “Every year we make it a point to give back to our community and in the last couple of years we’ve held strong to this commitment because of the faltering economy.”

San Gabriel Police Officer’s Association President, Fabian Valdez, echoed this sentiment in an official event press release.

“We see firsthand how the current economic down turn has affected families and we want to do our part in order to make peoples’ lives a little better. The men and women of this department are dedicated to helping others whenever we can, that is why we became police officers.”
