August 28, 2013 (FPRC) -- Leg 1 of the 13-14 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will see participants depart London on September 1 for Brest, France and then Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 33-day trip covers the first 5,630 of the 40,000 miles in the competition. This means plenty of hard work for the 650 crew members of the 12 competing fleets.
Ryan Bates, 32, is excited. 'I'm about to head off on a racing circumnavigation…' he said.
Bates mainly works with foreign affairs but will get the chance to compete, thanks the race’s unique qualifying requirements: an age minimum of 18, an adventurous spirit, and completion of the compulsory training.
Led by expert skippers assigned to each fleet, Clipper Race contestants come from various backgrounds, representing 40 nations and more than 200 professions. About 50 percent have had no experience sailing the seas, a fact sheet released by the organizer showed.
Participants must have had completed all three levels of a training course to be allowed to enter the race, organizer Clipper Ventures said. Level 1 focuses on basic seamanship and safety, Level 2 on yachts, and Level 3 on offshore racing tactics. This week, the crew underwent medical training by the PRAXES Medical Group.
Apart from the mandatory training, crew members are busy with individual preparations. Bates from the USA and Michael Jauncey from Canada have already ordered customizable sticker labels to use on the race.
'… [I] wanted to make sure my gear was distinguishable from all the rest of the crew's gear - much of which are identical pieces,' explained Bates. He finds the waterproof stickers from Active Images to be 'top-notch' and 'absolutely essential' for sailing.
The 2013 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race starts September 1 and ends July next year. Crew members who signed up for all eight legs of the race will travel across six continents before returning to London.
There will be 'emotional goodbyes' to deal with, anticipated the organizer, and 'communication blackholes' to enter as participants spend 11 months at sea.
