January 17, 2015 (FPRC) -- People throughout the UK are using DIY smoke bombs in a bid to remove pest infestations from their homes. Local fire services are being overrun with false alarm callouts from neighbours that have not been pre-warned prior to the device being set off.

These amateur smoke bombs, which can be bought over the counter, are generally meant for spaces such as greenhouses and lofts and are used to control particular types of pests, typically cluster flies. The products are not suitable for use in everyday living spaces due to the risk of contamination.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service has had to deal with a particularly high volume of call-outs as a result of the misuse of smoke bombs, having so far attended nine houses in Poole and further homes in and around Bournemouth and Weymouth. The persistent use of these DIY pest extermination smoke bombs is putting a significant strain on local services. Homeowners suffering from infestations are being encouraged to contact professional pest experts to help them deal with pest control problems.

Mark Stanford, Area Manager for Empire Pest Control, a London-based company, says:

“It’s understandable that people would like to attempt to deal with a pest problem themselves, as an infestation can have a significant effect on their property and ultimately their day to day routine. However, it is extremely important that any extermination process is carried out safely and securely by trained personnel to avoid irreversible damage to the property and injury to those involved.

“There are a variety of pest control methods that are used to exterminate infestations,” he continues. “Professionals are able to distinguish which method will be the most effective and are also aware of the health and safety precautions that need to be put into place when broaching a new project.”

Although it is advised that residents avoid the use of DIY smoke bombs altogether, people who insist on using these devices are being urged to inform their neighbours in advance to avoid wasting any more of the fire services’ valuable time and resources.
